    Torsion homology and regulators of isospectral manifolds

    Given a finite group G, a G-covering of closed Riemannian manifolds, and a so-called G-relation, a construction of Sunada produces a pair of manifolds M_1 and M_2 that are strongly isospectral. Such manifolds have the same dimension and the same volume, and their rational homology groups are isomorphic. We investigate the relationship between their integral homology. The Cheeger-Mueller Theorem implies that a certain product of orders of torsion homology and of regulators for M_1 agrees with that for M_2. We exhibit a connection between the torsion in the integral homology of M_1 and M_2 on the one hand, and the G-module structure of integral homology of the covering manifold on the other, by interpreting the quotients Reg_i(M_1)/Reg_i(M_2) representation theoretically. Further, we prove that the p-primary torsion in the homology of M_1 is isomorphic to that of M_2 for all primes p not dividing #G. For p <= 71, we give examples of pairs of isospectral hyperbolic 3-manifolds for which the p-torsion homology differs, and we conjecture such examples to exist for all primes p.Comment: 21 pages; minor changes; included a data file; to appear in J.     Room 90 is a project by Wavewalk that will mark the beginning of the true emergence of him as an artist. Since he started making music in his dorm room three years ago, Wavewalk has been working hard to create electronic music that evokes emotions and truly captures the story he is trying to tell. The project name comes from the current room number of his residence in Spain, which is where most of his ideas have stemmed from throughout this academic year.     The web of Linked Data holds great potential for the creation of semantic applications that can combine self-describing structured data from many sources including sensor networks. Such applications build upon the success of an earlier generation of 'rapidly developed' applications that utilised RESTful APIs. This deliverable details experience, best practice, and design patterns for developing high-level web-based APIs in support of semantic web applications and mashups for sensor grids. Its main contributions are a proposal for combining Linked Data with RESTful application development summarised through a set of design principles; and the application of these design principles to Semantic Sensor Grids through the development of a High-Level API for Observations. These are supported by implementations of the High-Level API for Observations in software, and example semantic mashups that utilise the API

    The high-level API service is designed to support rapid development of thin web applications and mashups beyond the state of the art in GIS, while maintaining compatibility with existing tools and expectations. It provides a fully configurable API, while maintaining a separation of concerns between domain experts, service administrators and mashup developers. It adheres to REST and Linked Data principles, and provides a novel bridge between standards-based (OGC O&amp;M) and Semantic Web approaches. This document discusses the background motivations for the HLAPI (including experiences gained from any previously implemented versions), before moving onto specific details of the final implementation, including configuration and deployment instructions, as well as a full tutorial to assist mashup developers with using the exposed observation data

    The Evolution of the Far-UV Luminosity Function and Star Formation Rate Density of the Chandra Deep Field South from z=0.2-1.2 with Swift/UVOT

    We use deep Swift UV/Optical Telescope (UVOT) near-ultraviolet (1600A to 4000A) imaging of the Chandra Deep Field South to measure the rest-frame far-UV (FUV; 1500A) luminosity function (LF) in four redshift bins between z=0.2 and 1.2. Our sample includes 730 galaxies with u < 24.1 mag. We use two methods to construct and fit the LFs: the traditional V_max method with bootstrap errors and a maximum likelihood estimator. We observe luminosity evolution such that M* fades by ~2 magnitudes from z~1 to z~0.3 implying that star formation activity was substantially higher at z~1 than today. We integrate our LFs to determine the FUV luminosity densities and star formation rate densities from z=0.2 to 1.2. We find evolution consistent with an increase proportional to (1+z)^1.9 out to z~1. Our luminosity densities and star formation rates are consistent with those found in the literature, but are, on average, a factor of ~2 higher than previous FUV measurements. In addition, we combine our UVOT data with the MUSYC survey to model the galaxies' ultraviolet-to-infrared spectral energy distributions and estimate the rest-frame FUV attenuation.     Dppa3 / Pgc7 / stella is a maternal factor and is not required for germ cell specification in mice

    BACKGROUND: In mice, germ cells are specified through signalling between layers of cells comprising the primitive embryo. The function of Dppa3 (also known as Pgc7 or stella), a gene expressed in primordial germ cells at the time of their emergence in gastrulating embryos, is unknown, but a recent study has claimed that it plays a central role in germ cell specification. RESULTS: To test Dppa3's role in germ cell development, we disrupted the gene in mouse embryonic stem cells and generated mutant animals. We were able to obtain viable and fertile Dppa3-deficient animals of both sexes. Examination of embryonic and adult germ cells and gonads in Dppa3-deficient animals did not reveal any defects. However, most embryos derived from Dppa3-deficient oocytes failed to develop normally beyond the four-cell stage. CONCLUSION: We found that Dppa3 is an important maternal factor in the cleavage stages of mouse embryogenesis. However, it is not required for germ cell specification

    When tragedy strikes, how do individuals make sense of suffering? If God is good, why do bad things happen to good people? Do people differ in how they understand suffering based on socioeconomic status and on religiosity and the way in which they view God? Research indicates that individuals of lower socioeconomic status tend to be more religious that those higher in economic status (Wimberley, 2016). However low SES individuals also tend to perceive themselves as having less control over their lives and God as having more control (Schieman, 2010). High SES individuals report feeling that they have more control over their lives than God (Schieman, 2010). How do individuals of differing SES view suffering? The present study examines the relationship between SES, religiosity, and views of suffering using the Views of Suffering Scale (Hale-Smith, Park, & Edmondson, 2012

    How to be an attractive male: floral dimorphism and attractiveness to pollinators in a dioecious plant

    BACKGROUND: Sexual selection theory predicts that males are limited in their reproductive success by access to mates, whereas females are more limited by resources. In animal-pollinated plants, attraction of pollinators and successful pollination is crucial for reproductive success. In dioecious plant species, males should thus be selected to increase their attractiveness to pollinators by investing more than females in floral traits that enhance pollinator visitation. We tested the prediction of higher attractiveness of male flowers in the dioecious, moth-pollinated herb Silene latifolia, by investigating floral signals (floral display and fragrance) and conducting behavioral experiments with the pollinator-moth, Hadena bicruris. RESULTS: As found in previous studies, male plants produced more but smaller flowers. Male flowers, however, emitted significantly larger amounts of scent than female flowers, especially of the pollinator-attracting compounds. In behavioral tests we showed that naĂŻve pollinator-moths preferred male over female flowers, but this preference was only significant for male moths. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest the evolution of dimorphic floral signals is shaped by sexual selection and pollinator preferences, causing sexual conflict in both plants and pollinators

    Doped Sr2FeIrO6 – phase separation and a Jeff ≠ 0 state for Ir5+

    High-resolution synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction data demonstrate that, in contrast to recent reports, Sr2FeIrO6 adopts an I1 symmetry double perovskite structure with an a–b–c– tilting distortion. This distorted structure does not tolerate cation substitution, with low levels of A-site (Ca, Ba, La) or Fe-site (Ga) substitution leading to separation into two phases: a stoichiometric I1 phase and a cation-substituted, P21/n symmetry, a–a–c+ distorted double perovskite phase. Magnetization, neutron diffraction and 57Fe Mössbauer data show that in common with Sr2FeIrO6, the cation substituted Sr2-xAxFe1-yGayIrO6 phases undergo transitions to type-II antiferromagnetically ordered states at TN ~ 120 K. However, in contrast to stoichiometric Sr2FeIrO6, cation substituted samples exhibit a further magnetic transition at TA ~ 220 K, which corresponds to the ordering of reff ≠ 0 Ir5+ centers in the cation-substituted, P21/n symmetry, double perovskite phases
